About

Wednesdays, 6:30PM, Followed by Youth Group @ 7:30PM

Described as “An Uncommon Worship Gathering, The Anchor is: A Little More cowbell, guitar & drums, more flip-flops and shorts.

Less about a sermon, and more about conversations and messages and questions.

We’re all on this faith journey together, so each week someone different shares the main idea and it could be with a video, or a teaching, or even a skit.

All-ages and all faiths are welcome. It’s decidedly Presbyterian, with a lot of Island Style.

The name “The Anchor” comes from the verse of Hebrews 6:19, “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure…”

We like to say that living on an island, we have a unique understanding of how the changing sea is so much like our daily life – sometimes calm, sometimes stormy. Having an anchor, especially the strongest one imaginable, is the only way to weather those storms.

With a rotating roster of musicians, you’ll never be bored. Pop, rock, soul, reggae, blues, contemporary, ancient – you name it, you might hear it. We like the diversity of God’s sound and our hope is He likes ours, too.

We’re always looking for musicians and vocalists – contact Ken Yarbrough for more information.

Connect

Connecting with us is easy.

We are a mid-week service meeting at 6:30pm on Wednesdays

We are part of Community Presbyterian Church. Our Pastor is Richard Safford. We all take turns sharing the message each week, and it could be in the form of a video, skit, message or something else uncommon. We roll like that.  The music could be just about anything – but we doubt you’ll be bored. We’re not a Youth Service – that comes after at 7:30pm, but we are all-ages, including the itty-bitty people, and we have childcare for them if you want.

We are on Facebook – a lot. Seriously, it’s ridiculous how much we’re there. Except for Richard, who is tragically unhip when it comes to technology.

If you want to get involved, here are some people to talk to:

Ken Yarbrough is the music guy. Mike Jones is the message guy. Katie Sikes makes people and things happen. Chelle Yarbrough is the nerd girl. Arlene Hughes, Beth Owens and Judy Cole help us stay on track, on budget and on time.

Q. What does “Uncommon” mean?

A. Most church services are labeled based on the style of their music, worship, and sermon – and generally fall into the more “traditional” or “contemporary” – it’s so that people can know what to expect at the service and aren’t freaked out. Our 11:00am Sunday Service, and the 8:30am Winter Service are traditional. We have a full choir (with robes during the winter!) and it follows the same order of service pretty much each week. It’s wonderful and we have very full services and a lot of happy folks.

As our youth group grew each week, we started to think that maybe, given our “island style” – laid back, music-loving, community oriented and kid-friendly – that we might want to add a new service that reflected those things too.

We named it “uncommon” because that’s what Port Aransans are. Contemporary just sounded a little too “Light-Rock-Less-Talk” to us, and we kinda feel like it defies labels anyway.

Q. What can we expect?

A. Great question. The answer is, we haven’t a clue. That’s not to say we’re not organized (we are), prepared (most of the time) and have things in place. We do. It’s just that we are very often surprised by how often God’s plans interrupt our own. So, show up, and we’ll all be surprised.

Q. Is this a non-denominational service?

A. Nope. We’re Presbyterian. We’re a mid-week service of Community Presbyterian Church. Having said that, you don’t have to be Presbyterian to come – everyone’s welcome. We’re not out to convert anyone. We’re on this journey of faith together, so no matter where you are, what you look like, what you believe – there’s room for you. Come hang out.

Q. I’m not sure what Presbyterians actually believe – can you tell me?

A. Our church is part of the PC(USA) – Here’s some info, straight from the website on what Presbyterians believe. Having said that, you’ll find folks with all kinds of differing traditions, ideas and beliefs. There are lots of conversations to be had. We like a few of the voices over at Presbymergent and the great blog of Bruce Reyes-Chow, the current moderator of the PC(USA). (Sidenote from Chelle Yarbrough: I once explained to my mom that the moderator is like the pope – we just happen to have a 40-something, cool, urban hipster at the helm, tweeting away and we vote a new one in every two years.)

Q. Am I too… (old, young, tattoed, pierced, short, tall, evangelical, traditional, reformed, decaffeinated)?

A. Probably. Welcome.

Q. Will I be comfortable?

A. We hope not. We’re not a country club. We’re here to challenge you and ourselves. We want you to think and ask and discuss and engage. Of course, if you’re talking about the temperature – we’ll do our best with the thermostat and such.

We’re sure there are hundreds more questions. As they come in, we’ll post answers. The quickest way to those answers, however, might just be to show up on Wednesdays and ask.
